Endangered Eel-Tailed Catfish Get a Boost with the Release of 1,000 Juveniles into Billabong Creek.
Conservation efforts are helping to restore eel-tailed catfish populations in New South Wales. On 18 March, YACTAC (Yanco Creek and Tributaries Advisory Council Inc.) funded the release of 1,000 juvenile eel-tailed catfish (Tandanus tandanus) into Billabong Creek near Jerilderie. The healthy fish were bred at Narrabri Fish Farm before being released into the creek with assistance from members of the Jeithi Aboriginal Group.
Stocking programs like this are designed to rebuild declining populations, increase breeding success and improve the long-term survival of this endangered native fish in the Murray–Darling Basin.
